Causes of Ice Damming Several factors contribute to the formation of ice dams: Uneven Roof Temperatures - When heat from inside the home escapes and warms the upper portion of the roof while the eaves remain cold, melting snow refreezes at the edges. Poor Insulation - Heat loss from inadequate insulation in the attic can cause rapid melting of snow. Inadequate Ventilation - Without proper airflow, warm air gets trapped, exacerbating the temperature differences on the roof. Heavy Snowfall - A thick layer of snow acts as an insulator, causing the roof’s surface temperature to fluctuate and promote ice formation. How to Prevent Ice Damming Prevention is the best approach when dealing with ice dams. Here are key steps homeowners can take: Improve Attic Insulation – Ensure that your attic is well-insulated to reduce heat loss. Enhance Ventilation – Proper airflow in the attic keeps the roof temperature consistent, preventing melting and refreezing cycles. Seal Air Leaks – Identify and seal any gaps around vents, chimneys, and ceiling fixtures where warm air can escape. Use Roof Rakes – After heavy snowfall, use a roof rake to remove excess snow from the roof’s edges. Install Ice and Water Shield – A protective barrier under the shingles near the eaves can help prevent water infiltration. Consider Heated Cables – Heated roof cables installed along the edges of the roof can help maintain a consistent temperature and prevent ice buildup. How to Remove Ice Dams Safely If an ice dam has already formed, it’s important to remove it carefully to prevent damage: Use a Roof Rake – Gently remove snow from the roof while standing safely on the ground. Create Channels – Fill a sock with calcium chloride and place it vertically across the dam to create a melting channel. Hire Professionals – If ice dams are severe, professional ice dam removal services use steam to safely melt ice without damaging the roof.
